Next generation USB plug will finally be smaller and reversible

Posted by Stanislav Furman on December 5, 2013

Good news!

The USB 3.0 Promoter Group has announced that the development of the next generation of USB plug has begun. Nothing is designed yet, but in the nearest future can expect a newly designed USB connector which will have the following key features:

  • Reversible.Yes! No worries about plug orientation any more!
  • Smaller size (comparable to MicroUSB)
  • Scalability of power charge. New new USB will adjust needed power depending on the device.

Not clear yet if the new connector will be compatible with existing USB 2.0, but I am sure there will be adapters on the market at least.

Aw! Google Drops Support for IE9

Posted by Stanislav Furman on November 12, 2013

The Google Apps blog announced that Google will end support for Internet Explorer 9, now that Internet Explorer 11 is available.

In the statement Google has reminded users that they support latest version of Google Chrome as well as the current and prior major release of Firefox, Internet Explorer and Safari on a rolling.

So, now the latest IE version is 11, which means that Google will officially support 10 (previous) and 11 (current) versions. This is interesting because a lot of IE users are still using IE9, and even IE8. All those users will be notified when use Google services.

Samsung officially announced Galaxy Round with curved OLED display

Posted by Stanislav Furman on October 11, 2013

After a number of rumour and speculations, it seems that Samsung is going to win against LG in a fight to be the first on the curved display phone market. Recently, Samsuang has officially announced the Galaxy Round, one of the first smartphones with a curved OLED display on the market.

It seems that Samsung Galaxy Round will be very performant which will make it very attractive for geeks. Announced specs are:

5.7-inch 1080p OLED curved display
2.3GHz Exynos quad-core processor
3GB RAM
13MP camera
2,800mAh battery
Android 4.3 Jelly Bean

The phone will cost around 1000$ on the US market.

It is noteworthy also because a while ago LG also announced their plans to release a smartphone with curved OLED display.

To be honest, I don't see what could make me buy such a smartphone. The curved display itself doesn't look exciting and I don't see what could be benefits of this feature in this specific model.

Meet AMPPS - a good alternative for XAMPP and WAMP

Meet AMPPS - a good alternative for XAMPP and WAMP

For those who is looking for a good alternative for XAMMP or WAMP web server stacks. There is a very good option called AMPPS!

The listed number of provided features is impressive. Unlike the other solutions Ampps comes with over 300 PHP web applications, over 1000 PHP classes and libraries including Joomla!, WordPress, Magento, Dolphin and more.

Very easy to install and manage services with the administration panel. You can easily switch PHP versions with only one-click action.

One thing to notice though... Despite the fact that there are several versions of PHP included, you cannot switch MySQL version which, to be honest, I don't find too critical.

Server configuration is also very straightforward using the web panel. If you mess up the configuration, you can reset it to default state which might be useful sometimes. :)

Also it is very easy to update! The app has built-in updater which makes life way easier when it comes to update Ampps.
